Safety
Tips

- If you are
offered a job, always have your parents check it out first - no
matter how good it sounds.
- Whenever
possible, walk to and from school with a friend.

- Never hitchhike...NEVER
EVER!
- Never answer
the door to a stranger, or someone you are not sure of.
- If you are
home by yourself and you answer the phone, don't let the caller
know that you are alone. Tell them that your big brother is in
the shower and he won't come to the phone, not that he can't,
but he won't. It makes him sound like a big guy. You can also
have a tape-recorder with voices in the background or even the
bark of a big dog.
- If you come
home alone, unlock the door and call out, "Hi Mom, it's me!"
Just in case someone is listening. Always answer, for example,
"Yeah, I saw Tim at school." This may convince anyone
listening nearby that someone is home with you.

- When you
are going to visit with a friend, always call home when you have
arrived, and make sure the people you are visiting know you have
called home.
- DO NOT use
a code word. It lets an adult get close to you. You don't want
to start a conversation with a stranger.
- Here is
a point that we would like you to share with your younger brothers
and sisters. If anybody was to
kidnap
them, they must never believe that their parents are mad at them.
This is a lie that these kinds of people use. Assure your
brothers and sisters that your parents and you would never stop
looking for them, no matter how long it takes to find you.
- Make sure
everyone in the house, including any younger brothers or sisters,
knows how to call 911 (or 999 in some other countries). Explain
to them that the operator will know where they are calling from,
and will send someone to help them.
- Never be
afraid to call the police They are there to help us, and they
really want to. Ask
one!
